  3. from 1989. Ozal first entered goverment
  4. service, then worked for the World Bank
  5. 1971-79. In 1980 he was deputy to Prime
  6. Minister Bulent Ulusu under the military
  7. regime of Kenan Evren, and, when political
  8. pluralism returned in 1983, he founded the
  9. Islamic, right-of-centre Motherland Party
  10. (ANAP) and led it to victory in the elections
  11. of that year. In the 1987 general election he
  12. retained his majority and in Nov 1989
  13. replaced Evren as Turkey's first civilian
  14. president for 30 years.
